THE PROS AND CONS OF HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATIONS


There are both pros and cons to Homeowners Associations. In one respect, they can promote "harmony" within the community by ensuring that everyone follows the rules. However, in another respect, those who often serve on the HOA Board of Directors let a little bit of power go to their heads and then pick on people in the community, either requiring them to pay for services they are not required to pay for or for arbitrarily and capriciously enforcing rules and/or improperly enforcing rules in order to harm those they do not deem fit to live within the community. In some cases, the Board of Directors just does not act at all to ensure that each and every member of the community is living by the provisions of the community by and through the CC&Rs or other rules promulgated by the Board of Directors.
